FisherFolk.
The Northumberland coast, once a thriving fishing hub, has seen its fishing culture decline, giving way to holiday homes and artisans.
This project will engage with East Northumberland's fishing communities to explore their rich history, involving them through free events, workshops, and conversations.
Similar to a musician releasing a new record, we will create an album of contemporary dance featuring a series of 10 4-minute works performed in outdoor village locations in their harbours, piers and coves. We will partner with local pubs and cafes to provide subsidised food during the performances.
This summer, we began the first stage of FisherFolk by gathering memories from coastal communities. Over two weeks, we created five unique 4-minute performances—each developed in response to the stories we heard and performed at the end of that same week in the community where it was created.
